Maine Coast Fishermen’s Association (MCFA) recently introduced the Maine Coast Monkfish Stew to benefit our Fishermen Feeding Mainers program that provides seafood to schools, food banks, and community groups throughout the state. The Monkfish Stew is available for purchase at more than a dozen stores from Arundel to Ellsworth.
The stew is made from fresh monkfish that is harvested by Maine fishermen. Monkfish is a delicious but somewhat unfamiliar option to many American consumers, making its domestic market unpredictable for Maine fishermen.
The stew is a way for us to introduce consumers to a local and sustainably sourced seafood choice and to support Maine’s fishermen.
The monkfish is not only locally harvested but is also cut by local businesses including Free Range Fish and Nova Seafood in Portland. It is cooked and packaged by Hurricane's Premium Soups & Chowders in Greene. Maine potatoes, carrots, cream, and lobster stock are used to make the stew. It is for sale in 16 oz and 24 oz frozen packages that can be easily reheated and served right from the bag.
“The stew is a delicious combination of local vegetables in a light creamy base with just a touch of spice, creating a dynamic and complex flavor profile that even those who have never tried monkfish can enjoy,” says Phil Wilbur of Hurricane Soups.
All of the proceeds from the stew will allow us to purchase fresh fish from local fishermen and continue to donate to those facing hunger insecurity in Maine communities.
To date, the Fishermen Feeding Mainers program has provided over 400,000 meals throughout Maine.
The stew is currently available for purchase at several seafood markets and specialty stores and is being served locally in Brunswick at Frontier and Brunswick Diner. It is also available online through Harbor Fish Market in Portland.
